Byron Bay Camping with Byron Campers

Looking for Byron Bay Camping or Free Camping in Byron Bay? Well, we at ByronCampers can give you the ‘low down’.
First, let’s get the bad news out of the way. There is no legal Free Camping in the Byron Bay area! And the town’s Rangers are an effective deterrent to any such activity.
There are a few ‘lay-bys’ on the Pacific Highway you can make use of for a night, (one on the northbound side of the highway at Tyagarah (just north of the Byron Bay turnoff), and second just a little further north. Another lay-by south of Byron on the old highway (just before the turnoff to Bangalow) is also available for a brief stopover.
However, there is plenty of official camping in Byron Bay. But let’s be honest – they are not cheap! Here are some to look at.
In the township is First Sun Holiday Park. It has powered and unpowered sites, cabins, barbeques, grassed picnic areas and everything Byron Bay township has to offer within walking distance.
An easy 10-minute walk from the town centre, and located right on Clarke’s Beach, is Clarke’s Beach Caravan Park. Again, all the facilities you’d expect from a modern camping ground are available. And Clarke’s is the closest caravan park to the famous Byron Bay lighthouse.
Another site worth a look at is Discovery Holiday Parks. Located 2 km from town, this family friendly caravan park is set among beautiful surrounds of melaleuca bushland with plenty of grassed areas. It boasts modern facilities with a full size tennis court, swimming pool, kiosk, barbeques, camp kitchen, wireless internet and lots more.
Located 5 minutes from town, and adjacent to beautiful Tallows Beach, Byron Holiday Park, has a variety of camping options. Another one to check out!
Suffolk Beachfront Holiday Park is located in Suffolk Park – a 10 minute drive south from Byron Bay along the coast road that runs between Byron and Ballina. This park offers a range of camping options to suit.
Further south along this same road is Broken Head Holiday Park. Located 7 km south of Byron Bay, this caravan park provides a quiet and relaxing atmosphere for a family getaway. Surrounded by National Park, there is plenty to see and do in this more remote spot. However, if you are after the night life, then you may find the drive to and from town a little annoying after a while as the speed limit is 50kmh-60kmh all the way.
Glenn-Villa Resort is a ‘child free’ campsite. So if you have a family holiday with the kids in mind, this one isn’t for you. Glenn-Villa provides un-powered sites and deluxe cabins and everything in between. And it’s just 400m from the centre of town.
Belongil Fields has from time to time hosted such renowned events as the North Coast Roots and Blues Festival and Splendour in the Grass music festival. Although these events have since moved to newer locations, Belongil Fields will always be associated with these iconic festivals. It could perhaps be described as being more of a ‘no frills’ camping area but with prices starting at $20 per night per person, and capable of accommodating the largest of RVs, then this may be one to consider. And at a pinch, you can walk into town – a 15 to 20 minute brisk paced walk.
For camping outside of the immediate Byron Bay town, you may like to consider the small townships of Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads.
Mullumbimby (15 to 20 minutes north of Byron Bay), is the self-proclaimed ‘Biggest little town in Australia’. Camping can be found at the Mullumbimby Leagues Club grounds (with the Brunswick River right on the doorstep), the Mullumbimby Show Grounds and Maccas Camping area. These are certainly considered good value for those looking for a ‘lower key’ camping experience with plenty of room and a quiet location (and of course much cheaper tariffs than those offered by the Byron Bay camping grounds).
Beautiful Brunswick Heads boasts 3 official camping locations – the Terrace Reserve Holiday Park, the Ferry Reserve Holiday Park and the Massey Greene Holiday Park. With the mouth of Brunswick River providing great fishing and boating, and surf beaches and sheltered swimming at Torakina Beach, Brunswick Heads is one of our favourite locations. With great cafes and eateries and a gentle paced way of life, the town retains its charm while providing a great holiday experience. Definitely worth considering if the ‘busy-ness’ of Byron Bay is not to your liking.
So if you are looking for Byron Bay camping you are spoilt for choice in the Bay and surrounding villages. You’ll find something that ‘fits’. To save disappointment, make sure you book early – particularly in the very popular sites in Byron and Brunswick Heads.
ByronCampers has you covered for a choice of rental vans, from our very popular New Age Road Owl (sleeps 5) to your ‘so easy to erect’ Avan aliners (sleep 3) and of course our rugged hard floor camper trailer.
